The program, free to veterans and active military who have sustained injury or trauma during their time in the service, gives hands-on time with horses and has been found effective reducing post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, in veterans. Sgt. Andrew Brandy, an expert of PTSD, explains why the program works so well. All of the trauma that these men and woman have experienced have come from other human beings...(which) the horses are not." Horses for Heroes founder, Rick Iannucci, said the transformation of those he helps is remarkable. You start seeing the spark come back in people's eyes, Jannucci said.
