π Networking Fundamentals: IPs, MACs & Pings Explained! π Welcome to Part 3 of our "What is Networking?" series on TryHackMe! This video is all about the foundational concepts that make the internet tick. While I recorded this previously, we're going through all the answers and explanations to build a solid understanding. Let's dive into how devices connect, communicate, and identify each other! What is a Network? We start by defining what a network truly isβsimply "things connected," whether it's our social circles or complex infrastructure like power grids. In computing, it's the same idea, connecting devices from two to billions! Networks are everywhere, from weather data to traffic lights, making them crucial for cybersecurity. The Internet & Device Identification Next, we break down the Internet as a "giant network" made of smaller private and public networks. We then explore how devices are identified: IP Addresses (IPv4 & IPv6): These are temporary identifiers. We learn about the four octets of IPv4 and the vast capacity of the newer IPv6. I also discuss the difference between public and private IP addresses and briefly touch on the mystery of how law enforcement tracks devices. MAC Addresses: These are permanent, physical addresses assigned at the factory, like a device's "fingerprint." We explore their hexadecimal format and how they're split into vendor and unique serial number sections. The Power of MAC Spoofing & Ping I demonstrate a practical scenario involving MAC spoofing, showing how faking a MAC address can bypass poorly implemented security, like a hotel's paid Wi-Fi. This is a real eye-opener! Finally, we explore Ping, one of the most fundamental networking tools. We learn how it uses ICMP packets to test network connectivity and performance. I perform a live ping, and we analyze the results together. We conquer all the quiz questions on IPs, MACs, and Ping! With this fundamental knowledge secured, we're ready for the next step in our TryHackMe journey: the "Intro to LAN" room! What's the most surprising thing you learned about networks today?
