"part of the philosophy change is how do i make you sucessful without jeapordizing the community." today public safety director tom swisstack announed a 34- point plan to help minute thumbnail 05:04 pm ease the over- crowding problem, among other jail issues. one part of the plan is to make sure people receive drug and alcohol treatment once they're released, to decrease the chances of them returning. "as a rule when you leave the detention center, you're in pretty good shape you've gained a little weight. you've pretty much withdrawn, you've received the treatment that you have. where the break now occurs is when i'm released back into the community and nobody connects me." swisstack also says he wants to hire more corrections officers---right now for every 86 inmates----there's one officer. he says, he beleives he can improve that to one officer for every 50 inmates---even with the current budget. and you've heard countless stories about inmates smuggling drugs into the jail. swisstack says part of his plan includes having increased surprise searches of cells with drug sniffing dogs.
