About to MDC Tops 120% Capacity

KOB Eyewitness News 4 finds mattresses are not only filling the bunks at the county jail, they're also lining the floors. That's the setup inside the women's low to mid level security area at MDC, all because of over-population at the jail. The Metro Detention Center west of Albuquerque is designed for a total capacity of a little more than 2,200 inmates. But right now the jail currently has more than 2,600 people locked up inside. "The recommendation is about 90 percent capacity. We're at about 120 percent," explained Chief of Corrections Ronald Torres. But the crowding isn't necessarily the problem. It's when things like medical, food and laundry services are disrupted that things start to break down. "Tensions can go high and people start getting upset and start fighting and those kind," Torres said. And the population will likely only grow. Starting in October, Metropolitan Court will no longer be doing arraignments on Saturdays. That means inmates will have to spend even more time behind bars before seeing a judge.
